Letter from the Editor
Membership
Main Old Guard Event for the Year

Dear Bros!

Our membership list keeps growing. We now have almost 50 members who receive our newsletter. However, there are still many out there whose addresses are unknown. If you are aware of the addresses of the brothers on the Lost Old Guard Member List (see end of newsletter for lists) please let us know and we will send out an invitation. There are also many on the Inactive Old Guard List who do not respond to our letters of invitation. Feel free to get in contact with any of these members and encourage them to join the Old Guard. Don’t be shy. Old Guards are never shy. Horny yes, shy never.

As was stated in the last newsletter the Geneseo Spring Alumni Weekend which takes place in April of every year will be the Main Old Guard Alumni Event. Concentrating on one main event will hopefully bring a better turnout. Also many Old Guards seem to be very busy with the Fall Hunting Season and other activities takes place in October when Homecoming occurs. If we have one main event those living a distance away can have the full year to decide to attend and make the necessary travel arrangements. Also rooms are easier to book for the Spring Alumni Weekend. As of this writing, we have not yet received the date for the next Geneseo Spring Alumni Event. However it has always been the last weekend in April which would make it Saturday, April 29, 2006. More definite information will be printed in future bulletins and newsletters.
Since the The Geneseo Quality Inn (Formerly the Days Inn at Geneseo) always sells out, it would be wise to reserve a room NOW if you are thinking of attending. The phone number is 585-243-0500. The rates are $75+ per night. Reservations can be cancelled without penalty 48 hours before check in time (3:00 PM). The Country Inn and Suites at Mt. Morris is a 12 minute drive away (402-501-6199). The rates are about $110 a night for a suite. Reservations can always be cancelled without penalty before 6 PM date of arrival. Other lodgings can be found at http://www.geneseony.com/lodgings.htm.

Fraternally yours,

Chuck Curatalo ‘63

Statue of Minerva Returns to the Milne Library

It’s an inauspicious return for the Roman goddess of wisdom—standing in the middle of Milne Library’s lobby with a cloth tarp thrown over her head. But after missing for 54 years, Minerva is back at Geneseo. The college will dedicate its new statue on Friday, June 10 as part of the 50-year class reunion activities. The statue of the goddess standing has been under wraps since delivery on May 23.

And even with the college relatively sleepy since graduation, “a lot of people are stopping, trying to sneak a peek,” said Kristin Jacobsen, a senior from Stone Ridge, Ulster County, who is working at the library over the summer.
Friday’s dedication will mark the end of a months-long detective story. The college first got a Minerva statue in 1906, as one of a number of New York colleges that had such artwork in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The statue stood in the entrance of the library of SUNY Geneseo’s Old Main building until 1921, when it was moved to the ground floor. The statue was last seen in 1951, around the time of Old Main’s demolition.
“Back when the college was one or two buildings, this really was a dominate symbol,” said special collections librarian Liz Argentieri.
Milne Library staff began investigating the statue’s whereabouts last year, going through material in the college archives. And Argentieri put up “wanted” posters around the village asking for any information on the statue’s whereabouts.
Meanwhile, the college looked into getting replica and also scouted out an old Minerva statue available from the Le Roy Historical Society, “all the while hoping the original would turn up,” Argentieri said.
But in late winter, when it became clear that the original statue wasn’t still on campus somewhere waiting to be found, the library ordered the replica goddess.
One common theory is that Geneseo’s original Minerva was razed along with Old Main, perhaps because by that time it was severely chipped and damaged.

The cost of fixing up the Le Roy statue was likely going to be more than buying a new one, according to the college.
Geneseo’s new $4,500 statue is a gift from the class of 2005, which rained enough money to also pay for an expansion to a study area in the library.
The Giust Gallery, a Massachusetts company that specializes in replicas of classical sculptures, made the reproduction. It had an old Minerva statue on hand with which it made a mold and then Geneseo’s replacement.
The new Minerva is not exactly what students would have seen a couple generations ago. Standing more than 8 feet tall, it’s about 2 feet taller than the original. And made of resin instead of plaster, it’s a lot lighter than the 350-pound original.
“I guarantee we’ll take better care of her,” Argentieri said.

Old Guard Notes

Tom DeBello ’63 and his wife Pat will be moving to their new retirement home in Wilmington, NC as soon as they sell their home in Smithtown, NY.

Jim Vidoczy ‘63 met up with a number of our old Phi Lamb friends at his 40th Reunion at Geneseo: Sue Frink,
Dorcas, Wanda Petronski and Joan Steeles. They even made his wife Peggy an honorable
member of the sorrority! He and his wife had a most wonderful time. So, yeah, he'll be at the Sig Tau April bash and he hopes to see even more old farts!

Steven Troskosky ’68 reports that he is officially retired from Allegany Limestone Central School District. See the Directory for his new email and phone number.

Jim Tobin ’65 has retired from his job as Superintendent of the Palymra-Macedon School District. He promises to write something for future newsletters. See the Directory for his new email address.

Jack Sheehan ’63 reports that as of July 20, 2005 he has 364 days until he gets his first Social Security Check. Send your congratulations to the OLD FART at costumerjs@aol.com.

Mick Brenno ’68 writes…..I’m glad to hear that we had a successful gathering at Geneseo earlier this year. I heard from Tom Mooney that he was going, but I wasn't able to go. I'm currently living on Peck's Lake just inside the Adirondack Park, north of the old industrial city of Gloversville. Both my wife Jeanne and myself are retired teachers, trying to survive the onslaught of the property tax burdens of living on said lake. Our retirement activities have sent us to the thought of wondering how did we find time to work in the past. Our newest family news was the arrival of our first grandchild in January 2005 (Vincent Michael). Our daughter Zoe lives nearby in Saratoga with her husband Bill. Jeanne relishes her new role as chief babysitter when our daughter works part-time. It's nice to hear about the guys from the old frat days. Please keep me informed as what is going on.
Thank you---Mick Brenno

Bill Kamalski ’68 writes….Sorry about not being able to make the spring get together. I am definitely going to get down for the next one. Just a little update on personal matters. I have just handed in my resignation to the Mexico Board that this is going to be my last year in the district. Giving them a year's notice gets me a bonus that can be added onto my FAS since I am a tier 1 member. My official date of retirement is August 4, 2006. I can not believe 36 years in education. My wife Chris will be going out at the same time and we are looking forward to a lot of traveling, boating, skiing, etc.
---We have two daughters--Katja--26 and Kristen--22--who at the present are both at home. Katja has graduated from SU and is currently completing her Masters in El Ed and Special Ed at Potsdam and is also the Watertown Director of the Youth Advocacy program. Glad to see that she is gainfully employed. Kristen --the one that didn't fall too far from the party tree meaning mine has just finished up at Cortland and will be going on to Grad School for gerontology in the field of management at either Towson or Univ at Colorado. Although both are at home now, I don't think they will be for long-- I hope. On a personal level I have been involved in competition Trap shooting and to a lesser extent skeet shooting in northern New York and have been doing quite well. At least if I don't knock them all down I scare the hell out of them. I am now looking forward to hunting season both fowl and large game. I can remember taking ducks and pheasants around Geneseo with Bill Palmer at Conesus Lake and at some honoraries farm. I hope this adds to the newsletter. I have enjoyed reading it. Love Bill---Kimo

Pat Pallend ’64 writes…..Hi Guys! My son Terrence is back in California and getting out of the Corps unless they throw a stop loss at him – it remains to be seen of course but we gotta be positive.
Apparently I am the “go to guy” whenever you need some stuff because the rest of those old bastards are sitting around with their thumbs up their collective asses. Pay attention here guys and do something and send some stuff to Chuck for the newsletter for Chris’ sakes. Sounds like Bruce (Jordan), Jack (Sheehan) and I are the only people still working which means we’ll probably outlive all of you … so to bring you up to date – -- -I serve, kinda sorta unofficially officially, as military advisor for Argonne Parades (because I sleep with one of the owners) and one of their events is the 4th of July Parade in Atlanta. The Parade is owned by WSB TV (an ABC affiliate) and is probably one of the largest 4th of July events in the country. It’s broadcast regionally and I don’t think you’d see it where you are. Anyway, as part of the opening of the parade this year there were 4 soldiers from the 3rd ID (Third Infantry Division to you) just back from Iraq – who are supposed to have a surprise reunion with their families on TV at the start of the event.
All of this had been planned for months with families being flown in and put up at one hotel while the soldiers are to come in and stay at another hotel – and I’m the guy who gets these kids and serves as their host, father figure and commanding officer which is all fine– but first and foremost we’ve got to be sure they are out of Iraq and harms way because you can’t have a reunion on TV with dead guys ‘cause that makes their families mad and sad – so we get confirmation that they’re safely out and that’s good except the return flights for the soldiers get all fucked up and it really goes from bad to worse and it’s looking like they may not make it on time and a reunion without people is no reunion at all.
So I’m now in one of my watering holes and thinking that there will be a reunion one way or the other and I’ve got 4 guys lined up in case these kids don’t make it … but the 4 guys I’ve lined up are all my age, can’t fit in their old BDU’s and if we bring ‘em out on camera the four young brides and families are really gonna be surprised because they’re expecting their husbands and now they’re being hugged by 4 guys who look like their grandfather.( work with me here and do the visual and it might give you reason the chuckle.)
All turns out well, however, because we finally get all the kids in. And here is the irony. Part of my welcoming speech at the airport is “Gentlemen, while you are authorized an erection you are not authorized to make use it until after being reunited with your wives at the parade”. A nice greeting from me of all people! Now I’ve got 4 young soldiers who haven’t had much fun for close to a year and all of you remember being their age once upon a time and so I leave it to you to figure out what’s going through their minds. I follow up on my initial remarks with “Gentlemen, while you may be willing to run the risk of embarrassing the United States Army, the 3rd Infantry Division, Argonne Parades, WSB TV and your families, you will not embarrass me!” Fortunately there is beer and we do manage to have a great time even though I’m sure they’re thinking “Grandpa here is out of his f….n’ mind.”
On the night before the reunion/parade I take them out to a surprise dinner at the best steak house in Atlanta with Miss America who’s the Grand Marshall for the parade (no bullshit here it’s true – and not only is she even better looking than her picture but she’s incredibly bright as well), the boys are all charged up and so am I– however there is no need for me to go into detail about Miss America’s chaperone who is a pretty attractive gal herself - and she’s directly on my left while my sweetie is directly on my right and that’s a story for another time.
The next day the parade starts on time, Miss America sings, the boys are reunited with their families and there is not a dry eye in the house - and that’s how I spent my 4th of July weekend.
When I return to school this fall I think I’ll use some of this for my essay on “How I spent my summer vacation.” Regards, Pat

Bio: Dale J. Metz (The Blonde One)

Dale J. married Sue (Spas) Metz the night before graduation in 1968. They spent their second night of married bliss is Dale’s dorm room at Nassau Hall. Dorm Director Art Oblas (and wife Carol) and a team of Geneseo evildoers (suite mates and I suspect some Sig Tau Brothers) tied a hundred+ small Indian bells to the bed frame and springs…..didn’t slow us down for a second and besides they left a great bottle of chilled wine! Graduated the next day! On to a years Special Ed teaching at PS 33 in Rochester, and then into the USAF for four years in San Antonio teaching Vietnamese English and later taught in the Community College of the Air Force. Sue taught English and Drama at a local rural high school. Moved to Greensboro, NC in 1973 because Tom Behm (taught at Geneseo), who was at UNC-Greensboro offered Sue an Assistantship for her MFA in Children’s Drama. I tagged along and went to work in a middle school as an EMH/LD teacher. In the mean time I started graduate school in Administration. The first two weeks in Greensboro were spent in a motel as we searched for a home. Like a good Sig Tau and a great Phi Lam we used that time wisely and nine months later Jessica Joy Metz was born. She now teaches 4th grade with Native American children in our beautiful North Carolina Mountains. And she married a Forest Ranger/River Raft Guide. So did I get a church aisle to walk her down? Did I get place cards and a country club reception? No they were married by the Pastor who is on the religion staff at Western Carolina Univ.(her alma mater) while going down class 4 rapids on the Nantahala River, while Dad ran along the bank at several locations(through the poison ivy) taking pictures….it was beautiful.

All catered by the Tribal Council….just beautiful and yummy! Sue and I taught for six years and she changed to high school and I became an Assistant Principal for 6 months and then in 1979 got my first school as a principal. In the mean time we found out that we could not have any more children so about 30 seconds later adopted Aaron Dale Metz who we got at 5 weeks. He is now 25 and works for a local health care company as an in home and sometimes group home direct care worker. After three years at my wonderful open elementary school, the job I was born for was offered to me. Gateway Education Center was a brand new self-contained school for severely, multi-handicapped children from birth to 21(part of the public school system). For the next 21 years I worked with my 200+ angels (79 deaths in those years) and together with the best staff on the face of the earth we gained Dept. of Ed. national model school status for Gateway. We also raised over $7millon in private grants and added a whole wing to the building with United Way and private funds.
We now get people from all over the USA (and the world) who move to Greensboro to bring their special kids to Gateway. Along the way I became the NC Principal of the Year, co-wrote Journeys in Education Leadership, received the local United Ways Lifetime Achievement Award, and lots of other blessings. I retired in June of 2004.
I am now serving as Adjunct Faculty at High Point University and Greensboro College in the Special Education Department….I LOVE teaching again! I also travel the country (and overseas, esp. Eastern Europe, Poland in particular) lecturing on early intervention with disabled infants and toddlers. I also have a public speaking business centered on the Power of Positive Humor. I work with everyone from big corporations to hospice units and nursing schools. Sue Spas Metz got a wild hair somewhere in the middle of her career and has been teaching physical and environmental science for many years. She is an award winning teacher (for her research especially in girls in science careers) and looks forward to retiring next year. She has also won a number of community service awards. As if our life wasn’t wacko enough we have just bought a 1942 lake cabin in Bemis Point, NY. We have just spent about six weeks up there on Chautauqua Lake, our daughter came and helped the old people too, redoing it to make it a summer place. Should be a great place to get away from the too hot

NC summers, but back to NC, where you can picnic all year…be at the beach or the mountains in 3 hours……come on down ya’ll! (Dale’s email address is smetz@triad.rr.com )

Education Fund

The Sig Tau website at www.geneseo.edu/~SIGTAU/brothers.html has added several new features to their website. There is a Sig Tau Eternal Page which lists brothers who have passed away. They have added the names of Dahn Walrath, Louie Pettica, Bill Brigham, Larry Allen, Don Fuller, Don Peterson and Duane Rubadeau. There is also an Alumni Database which you can view if you have Excel on your computer.
As you probably know, the Sig Taus will be losing their house on Court Street. Their landlord is selling the property to the next door County Jail which plans to expand its facility. However, they have found another property to lease. More details will be published in the next newsletter. They will still need help and have established a House Fund which is not tax deductible. There is a Sigma Tau Psi Education Fund through the college’s Geneseo Foundation. This will allow tax deductible donations that will be put directly toward a selected senior’s graduate school tuition. See the website for more details on how to donate to these funds.

OLD GUARD JOKES

ACTUAL AUSTRALIAN COURT DOCKET 1265-CASE OF THE PREGNANT LADY

A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused when on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested.

The case came up in court. The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself.

The man replied, "Well your Honor, it was like this: When the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She sat under a sweets sign that said: "The Double Mint Twins are Coming" and I grinned.

Then she moved and sat under a sign that said: "Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling", and I had to
smile.

Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, "William's Big Stick Did the Trick", and I could hardly contain myself.

BUT, your Honor, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, "Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident"... I just lost it."

Above jokes submitted by Bob Hussey ‘63

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I noticed that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice the trash can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. But then I think, since I'm going near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the can of Coke that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the Coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.
I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was going to do.
At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then I try to figure out why nothing got done today. I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long and I'm really tired. I realized this is a serious problem and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my email.

Do me a favor will you? Forward this message to everyone you know, because I don't remember to whom it has been sent. Don't laugh, if this isn't you already, your day is coming!

Remember:
Growing older is mandatory, growing up is optional, but laughing at yourself constantly...is therapeutic.

Two elderly widows are sitting on a bench in Florida discussing sex after 70. One old doll says to the other: "So, Mabel, what do you do when you get those occasional "urges"? "Well Florence, when that happens I just suck on a lifesaver and the feeling goes away". Florence: "That's fine for you, you live near the beach....."

Above joke submitted by Roger Brown ‘68

Little TONY was sitting in class one day.
All of a sudden, he needed to go to the bathroom.
He yelled out, "Miss Jones, I need to take a piss!!"

The teacher replied, 'Now, TONY, that is NOT the proper word to use in this situation.
The correct word you want to use is 'urinate.'
Please use the word 'ur-i-nate' in a sentence correctly, and I will allow you to go."

Little TONY, thinks for a bit, and then says, "You're an eight, but if
you had bigger tits, you'd be a TEN!"
