Local Old Guards Meet at Homecoming Fall Alumni Weekend ‘05

The “Local” Old Guards had a fine time at the Homecoming Fall Alumni Weekend on Saturday, October 1st. Al Tolsma ’65 was the first Old Guard to hit the Big Tree. Al, an expert in genealogy, was busy enjoying a pamphlet on the history of the Big Tree when Chuck Curatalo ’63 arrived with his usual camera in hand. Before long Dave Mead ’65 and Bob Veltz ’65 joined us. And low and behold we were joined by Jim Wright ’68 who arrived via motor cycle from Buffalo, NY!!!!! Not long after we were met by our newest “Local” Bob Meyers ’66 and family. Unbeknown to us, Bob has been living on Center Street in Geneseo for the past few years!
During several rounds of beers and dozens of wings, we talked about the good old days and sang of medley of old Sig Tau songs. We were applauded for most of our songs. However, the dropping of our trou during the “bare-assed and free” verses of We Are the Sig Taus was not appreciated by the other patrons. Doesn’t anyone have a sense of humor anymore??? We barely had our pants buckled before we were chased out the door by the angry Big Tree management. However we managed a quick getaway and we were soon driving by the Old Sig Tau House. We were sad to see that the house had already been demolished to make way for the expanded County Jail. Eager to see the new Sig Tau House we maneuvered our way around the scattered empty beer bottles during our drive down Orchard Street. We stopped by the apartment building which now serves as the new ST quarters. Rumor has it that our ST lads will be sharing the building with a sorority. Knowing our drunken horny brethren, we’re sure they will keep their house partners very happy and satisfied!

We stopped at the Vital Spot to say hello to our current brethren. We were greeted by Sean Couglin the Sig Tau Webmaster. It seems that most of our young offspring were too hung over from last night’s party to attend this event. After a few more rounds of draft beer we were off to Dave Mead’s house for a jam session with Dave, Bob Veltz and Bob Hussey. Ah, shades of the Spectors. As the guys jammed their guitars, Al Tolsma and Chuck Curatalo stuffed their ears with cotton and downed a six pack or two. We both agreed that with a little more practice the guys will be ready to perform for us at our next Geneseo get-together. Thank God we had to break for dinner at the Villa on the Green!
The Italian food was great and we all agreed it was a nice change from the busy Big Tree. The quiet atmosphere was appreciated by all! After stuffing ourselves with pasta, garlic bread and other Italian delicacies our severe attacks of flatulence discouraged us from attending the Ago-Sig Tau party. Instead we decided that the best thing to do was head home and get some Tum relief! After giving each other a hearty hug and the Sig Tau handshake we all vowed to meet again at Geneseo for the Big Sig Tau-Alumni Gala Event on SpringFest Alumni Weekend on Saturday, April 29th!

Bruce Jordan Brings “Shear Madness” to GEVA
Old Guards Present “Jenny Bare-assed and Free Award” to Founding Brother

The Old Guard really turned out to honor Bruce Jordan ‘63 and his hit comedy “Shear Madness” at Geva Theatre on Sunday, November 20th in Rochester, NY. Although it was officially a Geneseo Alumni Association Event, the theater was up to its ass in Old Guards, their friends and families. In attendance were the Walt Peeks ’63 and Nancy and friends, Bob Veltz ‘64 and Karen, Jack Sheehan ‘63 and Kathe, Bob Hussey ’63 and Nancy, Jack Langerak ‘67 and Gale, Jim Burk ‘64 and Ann, Dave Mead ‘64 and his girlfriend Sue, Jack Morrell ’63 and Diane, Dan Kwarta ‘63 and Judy, Tom Welch ’63 and his brood of 8 friends and family, Bob Meyers ‘65 and Julie, Spike Leonard ‘63 and his wife Sally and all the way from Toronto Jim Vidoczy ’63 and Peggy and their two handsome sons. And last but not least Chuck Curatalo ’63 and Debbie and of course Bruce Jordan ’63.

The audience laughed and howled throughout the performance. We all agreed the actors where excellent in their rolls and the plot was highly entertaining. Furthermore, Bruce peppered the play with hilarious one-liners about Geneseo and our glory days. The Old Guards, Geneseo Alumni and the rest of the audience showed its appreciation to the the cast and its director with a standing ovation.

After the hilarious performance, we proceeded to the Wine and Cheese Reception where Bruce was awarded a beautiful print of Main Street Geneseo by the Alumni Association for his generous contributions to the college. Then the Old Guards took the spotlight to honor Bruce. We presented him with the Sig Tau Genny Bare-assed and Free Award for his creative contributions in “Making the World Laugh Its Ass Off”. Chuck Curatalo noted that Bruce is not only a great creative force today but was also one in his Geneseo days. Besides being one of the founders of Sigma Tau Psi, Bruce was largely responsible for creating the Sig Tau Follies, The Regatta, and the infamous Genny Awards.

After finishing the wine and cheese, we belted out a few verses of the “We are the Sig Taus”. Fortunately, we had the good taste not to drop trou during the “bare-assed and free” chorus. When we were all sung out we headed to a local “dive” for a bit to eat. After some delicious sandwiches and more wine, beer and lot of laughs, we gave each other a hug and vowed to return again when Geva invites Bruce and his Shear Madness back for an encore engagement.

NOTE: Shear Madness became Geva’s highest grossing non-musical play during its 30 year history. No doubt that Geva will be inviting Bruce and company back in the not too distant future!

The Geneseo Alumni Association will again be sponsoring an event at the Saratoga Race Track in August.  There is a possibility of turning this into an Old Guard Event like we did with Shear Madness.  The day includes a nice buffet at the track in one of the tents and usually a dinner party in the evening. They have had this event in the past and it has been very popular. Several Old Guards live in the area and have participated.  Stay tuned for Special Bulletins regarding this event.

Bio: Bob Meyers ‘65

After leaving Geneseo, Bob went to work for Xerox Corporation in the late 60’s.  He completed his formal education attending night school at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned a Masters in Business Administration as well as a Masters degree in Computer Science.

Bob retired from Xerox in 2003 after 32 years of service.  He held positions including Marketing V.P. as well as V.P./Chief Information Officer.  He is currently working part-time as an independent Business Consultant specializing in Marketing and Information Technology.

He and his family returned to Geneseo in June, 2003 buying a large Victorian home on Center Street built in 1887.  Bob, his wife Julie, their son Sam (4) and daughter Alison (6) are enjoying calling Geneseo their home.

Bob has two older children who he is very proud of.  Jennifer (25), who recently received her Masters’ degree from Geneseo, is a high school science teacher in Manhattan.  Kevin (28), graduated from Conesus College and works for a large pharmaceutical company.  He lives with his wife in Buffalo.  Bob’s email address is BJmeyers@rochester.rr.com

Old Guard Notes

Dan Kwarta ’63 and Judy will be spending January through April in Dade City, Florida.    Judy is there for the duration  and Dan will be flying to Rochester to take care of business OR to give Judy a break. We have our 4th grandchild, a boy Aiden Moss Atkins. That makes 3 boys and 1 girl! dkwarta@rochester.rr.com

Jack Sheehan '63 continues to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment for throat cancer.  His doctors are confident of a full recovery.  Jack sends his thanks to Old Guards who have sent their best wishes.  In his own words, "everyone has been wonderful."  costumerjs@aol.com

Rod Curran ‘69 writes that he currently lives in Saint James, NY and is Assistant Vice President of Geico in Woodbury, NY.  He was a Sig Tau president from ’70-’71.  rcurran@geico.com

Founding brother Bruce Jordan “63 reports that the re-opening of "Shear Madness" in Chicago has been delayed from mid March to mid September. The comedy whodunit is now scheduled to open September 22, 2006 at The Little Chicago Theatre, a newly created space in Chicago's Loop. Bruce will direct the play as he did in it's first incarnation in Chicago where it broke all records for longevity in that city and remains the third longest non-musical play in the  history of the United States. He also directed the record-breaking production at the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester which opened last November.  Says Jordan "This 'enforced vacation' gives me time to really enjoy time in my New York apartment and catch up on all the shows and dinners that I have missed in Manhattan.  It also gives me more time to help out Jack and Kathe Sheehan when they come to New York for Jack's radiation and chemo treatments." brujordan@aol.com

Then and Now

This picture was taken moments after learning that the Center for Disease Control had found a cure for my problem. Unfortunately the discovery had come far too late for many others who spent amorous evenings upstairs at the Big Tree Inn with “you know who”. The people at the CDC are also looking for a guy named Tom Welch ‘63. If anyone knows his whereabouts have him contact the CDC at 800 232 4636 immediately. There still may be time to administer the vaccine

If any of you old bastards are ever in need of voice over narration track me down in Fairburn, Georgia. Fairburn, with a population of 47, is a little town south of Atlanta where elephants go to die. Everyone in Fairburn thinks I’m a big star because you can hear me on some TV commercials and once and awhile you can even see me. Hell, I was in the local saloon not too long ago and a couple of my damn commercials ran within about 20 minutes of each other on the tube and one of my buddies turned to me and said, “Damn, that’s you, isn’t it?” “Yup” says I, “that’s me.” This other old boy was sitting there swatting flies and was so impressed he bought me a beer. He even let me pet his dog. We got everything in Fairburn.

Chinese Newly Weds
 :
A Chinese couple gets married - and she's a virgin. Truth be told, he  is not too experienced either. On the wedding night, she cowers naked under the sheets as her husband undresses. He climbs in next to her and tries to be reassuring "My darring" he says, "I know dis yo firss time and you berry frighten. I pomise you, I give you anyting you want, I do anyting - juss anyting you want.. Whatchou want?" he says, trying to sound experienced, which he hopes will impress his virgin bride.

A thoughtful silence follows and he waits patiently (and eagerly) for her request. She eventually replies shyly and unsure, "I want to try somethin I have heard about .. numbaa 69". More thoughtful silence, this time from him. Eventually, in a puzzled tone he queries... "You want... Chicken wiff Broccori?"

Father O'Malley answers the phone.
"Hello, is this Father O'Malley?"
"It is"
"This is the IRS. Can you help
us?"
"I can"
"Do you know a Ted Houlihan?"
"I do"
"Is he a member of your congregation?"
"He is"
"Did he donate $10,000 to the church?"
"He will."

 PEST CONTROL -
A woman was having a passionate affair with an inspector from a
pest-control company. One afternoon they were carrying on in the
bedroom together when her husband arrived home unexpectedly.
”Quick," said the woman to her lover," into the closet!" and she
pushed him in the closet, stark naked. The husband, however,
became suspicious after seeing the rumpled bed and after a search
of the bedroom, discovered the man in the closet.
"Who are you?" he asked him.
"I'm an inspector from Bugs-B-Gone," said the exterminator.
"I'm investigating a complaint about an infestation of moths," the man
replied.
"And where are your clothes?" asked the husband.
The man looked down at himself and said..."Those little bastards."

A man goes into an adult entertainment shop and asks the clerk for
an inflatable doll.
"Would you like male or female?"
"Female, please."
"Would you like Black, or White?"
"White, please."
"Would you like Christian or Muslim?"This question confused the man . .
and he replied, "What has religion got to do with it? It's an
flatable doll!"
"Well," explained the clerk, "The Muslim doll blows itself up!"

Sig Tau Website:
Eternal Page

Education Fund

The Sig Tau website at www.geneseo.edu/~SIGTAU/brothers.html has added several new features to their website. There is a Sig Tau Eternal Page which lists brothers who have passed away. They have added the names of Dahn Walrath, Louie Pettica, Bill Brigham, Larry Allen, Don Fuller, Don Peterson and Duane Rubadeau. There is also an Alumni Database which you can view if you have Excel on your computer.
As you probably know, the Sig Taus will be losing their house on Court Street. Their landlord is selling the property to the next door County Jail which plans to expand its facility. However, they have found another property to lease. More details will be published in the next newsletter. They will still need help and have established a House Fund which is not tax deductible. There is a Sigma Tau Psi Education Fund through the college’s Geneseo Foundation. This will allow tax deductible donations that will be put directly toward a selected senior’s graduate school tuition. See the website for more details on how to donate to these funds.
