Letter from the Editor:
Membership Report
Spring Alumni Weekend

Dear Old Guards,
It was a gray and rainy morning as I drove from Greece, NY to Geneseo. The dreary weather was not the only thing on my mind as I made the 45 minute journey to The Big Tree Inn. There were three members from the ’68 pledge class coming whom I’ve never met. I wondered how comfortable they would feel with the earlier pledge class members whom they probably never met or hardly knew.

I soon realized I had no need to worry. After walking into the tavern I was greeted by Jim Wright (’68)* and big smile. I have to admit his full head of thick gray hair made me envious and self-conscious. Where was my ET beret when I needed it? After a few polite exchanges about our jobs and families, we chuckled about the legendary (and imaginary) Sam Trespino. (You can read about Jim’s most recent strange encounter with this character in the Old Guard Notes section.) It wasn’t very long before we were joined by regulars Al “Ace” Tolsma ’65, Bob Hussey ’63, Dave Mead ’65, Bob Veltz ’65 and newcomers Tom “Moonzo” Mooney ’68 and Tom Powers ’68.

Moonzo and Tom Powers had come in the night before and had gone to the Friday night party at the ET House. Sadly, they reported that our 40+ year old Regatta Paddle is now in two pieces! Don’t these young punks have any respect for our historic artifacts?

While our amiable bartender who described himself as a member of the PIGS, another Geneseo fraternity, kept us supplied with beer and wings (mild and hot) we explored Moonzo’s pledge book which he retrieved from his attic. While flipping its pages, I was surprised to see that we are related. His first big brother was Jim Vidoczy ’63 who was my big brother and Moonzo’s big brother was Jim Burk ’65 who is my little brother. He was disappointed to hear that Jim who is a dentist in Sodus, NY couldn’t make it as he was performing an emergency root canal on the infamous “Maria” or was it the other way around?

Moonzo also brought along his original Sig Tau jacket or what was left of it. Bob Veltz borrowed it and is trying to see if he can get reproductions made for each of us. He’ll keep us posted on his progress. He has sold out all of the sweatshirts but will have more made if there are requests.

As we chugged our beers we talked and laughed about our adventures at the Regattas, White Rose Balls, Follies and the infamous Jenny Awards. We all agreed that looking back the Jenny Awards were at times very cruel and we agreed that it is one tradition we are glad to see isn’t carried on today.

After the wings were devoured and our beer bellies full we headed down to the Statesman formerly the good ole M&B to mix with our young brethren. As we entered the Statesman we were warmly greeted by the young ET friends we made in past events: John Bruno, Sean Coughlin, Mike Hoock and many others. Glad to say they treated as one of the guys not some old relics. Nevertheless we felt insulted when they suggested we take our Viagra before heading to the Ago House Party. However, shortly after we arrived we surprised the punk Sig Taus at how quickly we responded to the Ago’s complementary lap dances. Yes, Old Guards can still get wood when it counts without pharmaceutical aids!! After more fun, frolic and another keg of beer we headed to the Tree for Cocktail Hour.

At the Tree after more drinks and wings we were joined by Tom Welch ’63 who still hasn’t tied the knot with his lovely fiancée. We talked more about the old days when the frat had close ties with honoraries Cythia and Bill Seldon, the Edges and the Rubadeaus. We remembered the rush parties and kegs we had at Selden farm.

When it was time for dinner we continued with stories from our past as our waiter kept our glasses full of beer and wine. We laughed hilariously when Tom Welch told us about the time at the White Rose when he snuck “upstairs” at the Big Tree with the wife of an honorary. He was surprised to have the company of another honorary’s wife standing against the hallway with her gown lifted high as she was being serviced by another Old Guard who shall remain nameless. Of course, their husbands were downstairs too drunk or too oblivious to notice their absent partners. We also talked more about the Follies and the drunken antics at the Regattas. We all agreed Tom Powers’ story of the skit he performed at the Follies was the funniest but too risqué to print here!

After dinner most of us were all laughed out and headed home vowing to return next year. However a few of us diehards headed back to Ago House for one last lap dance before calling it a night!

*NOTE: The year after a member’s name in this newsletter will always refer to his pledge class or the year he joined the fraternity, not the year of graduation.

Membership Eligibility

Due to requests of many Old Guards we have expanded our membership to include the pledge class of 1968. Letters requesting membership and contact information have been mailed out to over twenty of the thirty-six pledges from that year. (Yes, they had a huge pledge class that year—more pledges than members.) We are trying to locate the addresses of the remainder of that class as well as other pledge class members. See the Directories at the end of the newsletter for those who have been contacted and those whom we are searching for. As of this writing the following ’68 Old Guards (plus one from ’67) are:

Mick Brenno
Roger Brown
Dan Downing
Bill Kamalsky
Steve Troskosky

Carl Kanoff
Howie Kranz ‘67
Bruce Lomnicki
Tom Mooney

Bruce Parmiter
Carl Pauli (Puliafico)
Tom Powers
Jim Wright

That brings the total to 44 Old Guard Members!

Why don’t you ’68 pledges give some of your Inactive Pledge Class Members a call or mail a note to encourage them to send their email address to Chuck at ccuratal@rochester.rr.com so they can receive our newsletter? Same for other pledge classes. (See Inactive List for contact info!)

Geneseo Spring Alumni Weekend:
Main Old Guard Alumni Event for the Year

It was the consensus of the members who attended our Old Guard Spring Event that the Geneseo Spring Alumni Weekend which takes place in April of every year be the Main Old Guard Alumni Event for the year.
It is felt that if we concentrate on one main event we would get a better turnout. Also many Old Guards seem to be very busy with the Fall Hunting Season and other activities takes place in October when Homecoming occurs. If we have one main event those living a distance away can have the full year to decide to attend and make the necessary travel arrangements. Also rooms are easier to book for the Spring Alumni Weekend and the Big Tree Inn is more flexible with seating. (Note: The Days Inn at Geneseo is now called The Quality Inn: same phone number)
As of this writing, we have not yet received the date for the next Geneseo Spring Alumni Event. However it has always been the last weekend in April which would make it Saturday, April 29, 2006. More definite information will be printed in the September Old Guard Newsletter.
Those “Geneseo Area’ Old Guards who wish to attend Homecoming can communicate among themselves and formulate their own plans for the day. Homecoming is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st, 2005. We will publish the Sig Tau schedule of events in the September newsletter.

Old Guard Special Event:
Founding Brother Bruce Jordan’s Smash Hit Shear Madness at GEVA
Rochester, NY

Bruce Jordan ’63 a Founding Brother will be directing his smash hit comedy “Shear Madness” at GEVA Theater in Rochester, NY. The play will run from November 8 through the Christmas Holiday Season. The Geneseo Alumni Association is planning an alumni event which will probably include a group dinner or lunch with tickets to the performance. Stay tuned to Old Guard Special Bulletins for details about this event in which all Old Guard Alumni will be invited. This is a great opportunity to see our Founding Brother’s World Wide Acclaimed hit which holds the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest running play in the history of the American Theater. You can find out more about Bruce and Shear Madness at the company website http://www.shearmadness.com/ The Study Guide Link gives a good history of the production.

Old Guard Notes

Bill Kamalsky ’68……I quit drinking Jenny Crème long ago and have gone to Bud—this helps to deal with 900+ middle school students at Mexico Middle School where I am currently principal. If they only knew what I was like in college they sure as hell would not have put me in charge of a school! That’s all for now—again thanks for getting in touch. Stay well.

Tom Powers ’68……reports that he is Director of Audiology and Chief Research Officer at Siemens Hearing Instruments and once fitted Ronal Reagan with hearing aids at the White House in 1988.

Jim Wright ’68……. Not much out of the ordinary to report on most of my life events. Everything has gone reasonably well- MS in Accounting from SUNY Binghamton- 1973, married for 32 years, two offspring both grown and on their own, house in the burbs for 30 years., gainfully employed for the past 32 years, and no jail time served to date.

Health wise, it's a different story. The cumulative effects of a decadent lifestyle rooted in the late 60's subsequently augmented by a biker lifestyle eventually took their toll on my health. Unfortunately, much of the damage cannot be reversed. Presently, I'm recovering rather slowly from various botched surgical procedures- liposuction, tummy tuck, facelift, hair transplant, and several others. I fell victim to a surgeon whose incompetence left me terribly deformed. So hideous are the results that I rarely appear in public during daylight hours and am forced to work from home.

Recently, I've enlisted the help of a physician with impeccable credentials to accelerate my recovery. My new surgeon, Dr. Sam Trespino, assures me that recent advances in medical technology will allow him to fully restore my appearance to the level I enjoyed circa 1968. Thus far, I've been very impressed with Dr. Trespino and buoyed by my initial progress. Pending satisfactory progress with my appearance, I'd be pleased to participate in future Sig Tau Old Guard Events.

Tom “Moonzo” Mooney ’68……Just became a Grampa for the first time to Liam Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Steve Trokosky ’68…..reports that he is retiring this year as Superintendent of Allegany-Limestone Central Schools but will stay in the area because of a terrific new girlfriend.

Bob Veltz ’65 and Dave Mead ’65….. are still working on plans to reunite their band The Specters for a performance at our next reunion.

Tom DeBello’s ’63…. mother Adeline recently passed away at 9O after a long illness. Those of you who were close to Tom may wish to send a donation in his mother’s memory to Hope Children’s Fund at 301 Owasco Drive in Pt. Jefferson, NY 11737.

Bruce Jordan ’63 and Jack Sheehan ’63 and Family……are planning a month long tour of Eastern Europe in June. The tour will include a river cruise and a stay in Rome.

Sig Tau Website:
Eternal Page
House Fund
Education Fund

Sig Tau website at www.geneseo.edu/~SIGTAU/brothers.html has added several new features to their website. There is a Sig Tau Eternal Page which lists brothers who have passed away. They have added the names of Dahn Walrath, Louie Pettica, Bill Brigham, Larry Allen, Don Fuller, Don Peterson and Duane Rubadeau. There is also an Alumni Database which you can view if you have Excel on your computer.
As you probably know, the Sig Taus will be losing their house on Court Street. Their landlord is selling the property to the next door County Jail which plans to expand its facility. (However, they have found another property to lease. More details in September Newsletter.) They will still need help and have established a House Fund which is not tax deductible. There is a Sigma Tau Psi Education Fund through the college’s Geneseo Foundation. This will allow tax deductible donations that will be put directly toward a selected senior’s graduate school tuition. See the website for more details on how to donate to these funds.

BIO: An Email from Bruce Parmiter ‘68

Geneseo was a fabulous, fun-filled experience. I could have spent several decades there, if only my body could have stayed 25 for that length of time.

Too bad you have not been able to contact Eric Wilson ’66. I remember coming out of the Palace Lounge at 1 PM where Tom Crowley ’66, Beatle Bailey, and I tended bar just in time to see Eric come racing north on Main St. swinging widely around the fountain, and then crash into the house next to the Village Tavern (I think it was called that). Eric who was known to imbibe every so often, was blotto, so I dragged him out of the car and spirited him away to Beatle’s house to sober up and thus avoid DWI type charges.

Ditto for Tom Crowley. I was Best Man at his wedding to Marie Caracappa (Clio) which happened down on Long Island during semester break their senior years. Several car-loads of the brothers attended but I understand their union did not stand the test of time. Tom also had occasion to imbibe, and often, after extricating him from a lengthy session at the Palace, we would run down the hill to our apartment on Wadsworth St. where he often would run full tilt into the front of the house as he was unable to veer from anything but a straight ahead course.

Tom’s lengthy sessions often started at 2 PM when Pat Pallend ’63 would open the Idle Hour and then fun till the wee hours of the night. Ah Glorious days they were. And speaking of Pallend, he attended my wedding in Boston in 1974 and one of my bride’s uncles pigeon-holed him for a lengthy chat, providing all sorts of advice on how to be a good husband, as the uncle thought Pat was me (there is a faint resemblance, but I’m a hell of a lot better looking). But I have to thank Patrick as when I was still single and living in Boston, Pat and his then wife Robin were living in Webster, Mass and Pat was teaching at Worcester. I used to bring lady friends and spend the weekend with Pat, and when I brought Janet, Pat told me that she was a “keeper”.

I followed his advice and Janet and I are still very happily together after more than 31 years, Janet and I have three wonderful children, two boys and a girl, who have graduated from James Madison University (the first one) and University of Virginia (the second two) and all are working in the DC area (DOJ, NSA, and Medical research). I have just retired from the Government with a bit over 38 years of service and am happily doing exactly what I want each day. Janet continues to teach in the Fairfax County School System. Life is good. We plan to move to the NC coast in the next year or so, to escape the snow, get some waterfront property, and yet maintain a change of season.
The Spring Alumni Weekend sounds great. I hope I can make it. My email address is parmiterb@aol.com .
